Photographer. Chiefly known for his portraits. John Watkins (1823 - 26/12/1874) was active at 34 Parliament Street, London S. W. from 1851-1875.Watkins had had been a manager for Richard Beard at Parliament Street until 1851 and then took over the studio. Richard Beard was notable as having the first photographic studio in London at the Royal Polytechnic Institution.
In 1861, he received a Royal Warrant, his photographic stamp states he is 'Photographer to the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Ex Royal Family of France'.
Brother of Charles Watkins.
