According to his cabinet cards Russell established a photographic business in 1852, he also had addresses in Windsor, Crystal Palace and Southsea besides those in London. Russell & Sons photographed various members of european royalty and advertised this by adding various royal coats of arms to their cards.

According to Pritchard, James Russell & Sons were active from 1883 to 1908 at the following addresses:

1883- 1885 29 Union Road, Tufnell Park N.W.

1884 - 1888 199 Brompton Road S.W.

1886 - 1899 49 Brecknock Road N.

1889 - 1908 17 Baker Street
