William Hogarth (1697 - 1764)

RA Collection: Art

One of a pair of scenes by William Hogarth showing the moments before and after lovemaking. The engravings reproduce (in reverse) paintings by Hogarth (c.1730-1) now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

Hogarth was drawing on a formula common to French genre scenes of the period. To this he added, in Elizabeth Einberg's words, 'a brutal realism that looked beneath the fashionable veneer', which Hogarth emphasised even more in the engravings than the paintings, making them 'even more sexually explicit and suggestive of violence'.
