Baths of Caracalla, Rome: interior of the Tepidarium

C.R. Cockerell RA (1788 - 1863)

RA Collection: Art

Cockerell considered the baths of Ancient Rome to be 'the most remarkable buildings the world has ever seen'. To bring this home to his students he asked an assistant in his office by the name of Jackson to produce this magnificent watercolour of the interior of the tepidarium of the Baths of Caracalla. It is based on a detailed restoration published in a book by the French architect G.-A. Blouet in 1828 and was probably first used by Cockerell to illustrate his Royal Academy lectures in 1845.
