Bust of Ambrose McEvoy, A.R.A., 1916

Francis Derwent Wood RA (1871 - 1926)

RA Collection: Art

Like his friend Augustus John, the portrait painter Ambrose McEvoy trained at the Slade (1893-1896) before joining the New English Art Club (1902). John wrote that McEvoy's

'general appearance, owing something to Whistler, whom he knew personally, and to Aubrey Beardsley, whom he didn't, comprised a straight low fringe of black hair, a monocle, a high collar of modulated white, a black suit and patent leather dancing pumps; he was in fact a perfect 'arrangement in black and white'.
