Bust of John Gibson, R.A., 1868

William Theed [Jr] (1804 - 1891)

RA Collection: Art

William Theed worked as an assistant to Edward Hodges Baily before entering the Royal Academy schools in 1820. He lived in Rome from 1826-1848, where he studied under Bertel Thorvaldsen, Pietro Tenerani, and R. J. Wyatt. During his time there he also worked in the studio of John Gibson. The two sculptors became life long friends and in later years Theed often acted as a liaison between Gibson and his England patrons.

This bust is a copy of an earlier bust of Gibson by Theed (Conwy Parish Church, North Wales), which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1852. Another copy is in the National Portrait Gallery collection.
