Vatican Museums (Vatican City), Cast of console with two swans

Cast of console with two swans, Late 18th century/early 19th century

From: Vatican Museums (Vatican City)

RA Collection: Art

On free display in The Dorfman Architecture Court

This cast is of one of two virtually identical consoles which are now in the Sala a Croce Greca of the Vatican Museums (no. 561a, no. 594a) which date from the 1st or 2nd century. Both consoles have a distinctive decorative scheme that features two swans who hold a garland between them.

The cast was probably acquired by the RA from the collection of casts of Thomas Lawrence which was sold at auction on 10 May 1830. The sale catalogue includes over 105 items from the Vatican with at times only vague description.
