John Yenn RA, Design for a lakeside pavilion: elevation

Design for a lakeside pavilion: elevation, 1774

John Yenn RA (1750 - 1821)

RA Collection: Art

This is a very fine drawing both in terms of design and draughtsmanship. The elevation of the garden pavilion is shown resting on a rusticated podium with centrally cut steps leading down into a lake. On either corner of the podium are sculpted fountains of sea creatures with scallop shells seated upon dolphins. The pavilion is boldly articulated with Corinthian columns beneath an ornamented frieze, cornice, balustrade and urns, the central urn acting as a smoking chimney. There is a large 10 foot high central door flanked by pedimented windows. Yenn has surrounded the image by a border decorated with leaves.
