This bronze cast was taken from an eighteenth century plaster cast that at one time hung in the Royal Academy Schools.

This écorché leopard, also traditionally described as a panther, is depicted by George Stubbs in his preparatory studies for A Comparative Anatomical Exposition of the Human Body with that of a Tiger and a Common Fowl (1804-6) .The RA écorché is very similar to five of Stubbs’s preparatory drawings held by the Yale Canter for British Art, New Haven, Paul Mellon Collection, (B1980.1.94-98) For this reason, this pioneering artist-anatomist is also thought to have made the écorché.
