George Frederic Watts RA (1817 - 1904)
RA Collection: Art
At the top of the sheet are two drawings of a seated man hammering a plank. Lower down, is a seated man holding a saw and a detail of a bent arm. These are preparatory drawings for the two figures situated below Noah in 'The Ark of Deliverance', also known as 'The Building of the Ark'. Watts began work on this composition in the early 1860s when preparing plates for the Dalziel brothers' proposed Illustrated Bible, and later painted the subject between 1880-90 (Watts Gallery).
