Gargoyle, 2003

David Mach RA (b. 1956)

RA Collection: Art

Gargoyle was exhibited in Mach’s show 'Straight Up' at Galerie Jerome de Noirmont, Paris in 2003. It was one of two sculptures of the same title in the exhibition (the other gargoyle carries an oil drum rather than a hose). The juxtaposition of two disparate components, such as the everyday and the fantastic, is characteristic of Mach’s work. So too is the playful use of scale: many of Mach's works are representations of familiar objects made from thousands of repeated elements such as coathangers or pins. The elements of his sculptures are often acquired in large quantities directly from manufacturers, as may have been the case with the gargoyles.
