William Cotton (fl. 1834 - fl. 1843)
RA Collection: Art
A watercolour landscape with a tree on the right, a church on the left and a figure in the centre wearing a blue jacket. William Cotton was a Derby porcelain painter and this scene, along with the others on the same mount, is typical of the sort of rural landscape popularly depicted on plates and other porcelain ware in the early to mid-19th century. The drawing was previously in the collection of either John Homes Smith or his son, J. H. Smith, both of whom were involved in the porcelain painting industry.
