William Hogarth (1697 - 1764)
RA Collection: Art
The first plate of William Hogarth's set of four Times of Day, published in 1738 and derived from paintings made by Hogarth in 1736-7 (reversing the images in the process). The painting of Morning is in the National Trust property Upton House.
Each of the four scenes depicts a different area of London. Morning takes place outside St Paul's church in the Piazza of Covent Garden, and shows an elderly woman making her way to morning service, negotiating all-night revellers and women setting up their market stalls.
According to an inscription below the image, this is one of the very first impressions printed, which accounts for the unusual strength and clarity of the impression.
