Frederick Gore RA, Mountain Landscape, Majorca

Mountain Landscape, Majorca, ca. 1960

Frederick Gore RA (1913 - 2009)

RA Collection: Art

Frederick Gore's Majorcan landscapes are reminiscent of the Fauve paintings of the South of France in their bold contrasts of colour and the intensity of the depiction of a sun-drenched vista. Gore, however, also remains interested in the formal structure of landscapes, and wants to create the impression that what is shown on the canvas is not complete in itself, but that the landscape stretches out beyond the painting.

Gore painted many of these landscapes direct from nature and through his observations of the effect of changing light on colour, creates the light and atmosphere of the place.
