Ambrose McEvoy ARA (1878 - 1927)
RA Collection: Art
A portrait drawing of an elderly man with a moustache wearing an apron and holding a pipe in his right hand. The drawing is by Ambrose McEvoy, who is better known for his portraits of society women and men. This informal presentation of a man in working clothes is therefore unlike much of McEvoy's portraiture. It is not known who the drawing depicts, but the relaxed pose of the sitter suggests that the artist and he were familiar with one another. The working attire suggests that the sitter might be a sculptor or a printmaker. Alternatively, the man could be a relation of McEvoy.
The drawing was bequeathed to the Royal Academy by the artist Carel Weight RA.
