George Frederic Watts RA (1817 - 1904)
RA Collection: Art
This drawing is a portrait of Sara Prinsep (1816-1887). While the face is carefully drawn in pencil with subtle, blended shading, the hair appears to have been hastily-drawn or deliberately left unfinished. The sitter appears to be wearing a filet or similar decoration in her hair. Sara and her sister Virginia were known for their unconventional dress sense and both wore simple hairnets and veils.
Sara Prinsep was the subject of several portraits by Watts as well as sitting for a painting entitled 'In the Time of Giorgione' (Watts Gallery).
