After Anthony Van Dyck (1599 - 1641)
RA Collection: Art
This line-engraving is after a painting by Sir Anthony van Dyck from 1638, now in the Royal Collection Trust https://www.rct.uk/collection/400159/queen-henrietta-maria-1609-1669. Van Dyck worked at the court of King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria from 1632 and the Queen commissioned two portraits - this profile view and another frontal - for the sculptor Bernini to work from after he had created a bust of her husband. However, the sculpture was never made.
This print was issued as a private plate and as a result is very scarce. The engraver John Henry Robinson presented this particular impression to the Royal Academy as part of a portfolio of engravings he presented to the institution as his Diploma work upon his election as an Academician in 1867.
