Philip Reinagle RA, Sketch of a branch with leaves

Sketch of a branch with leaves

Philip Reinagle RA (1749 - 1833)

RA Collection: Art

Philip Reinagle was an accomplished botanical artist and provided illustrations for Dr Robert Thornton's publications, in particular The Temple of Flora, with a New illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus von Linnaeus (London 1807). Reinagle's drawings in the Royal Academy collection do not relate specifically to any of the published plates in this book. However, Thornton originally intended to have more illustrations to his text so it is possible that some of the drawings relate to illustrations which weren't published. Reinagle also employed his knowledge of plants and foliage in his landscape and sporting paintings.
