Charles Landseer RA (1799 - 1879)
RA Collection: Art
Charles Landseer was the elder brother of Sir Edwin Landseer. He studied in the Royal Academy Schools from 1816 and in the early 1820s travelled widely in Portugal and Brazil.
He painted many subjects from the lives of the English kings and queens as well as scenes from the English Civil War, and was often inspired by the historical novels of Sir Walter Scott. When first exhibited this painting was accompanied by an extract from Scott's Castle Dangerous. In this scene the artist focussed on the dying man's affecting relationship with the priest who recites the last rites. Charles made a particularly careful study of accessories and costume which became a trademark of his work and is evident in this painting.
