Michael Angelo Rooker ARA (1746 - 1801)
RA Collection: Art
Previously identified as a view of the gatehouse at Margam Abbey, this drawing is in fact a side view of part of the gatehouse at Battle Abbey. The watercolour appears to have been intended as a pair with RA 03/4270, a view of the churchyard in nearby Winchelsea. Rooker conducted numerous sketching tours in Sussex, which offered historic sites and coastal scenery within easy reach of London. He exhibited Sussex views at the Royal Academy from 1776 onwards.
The composition features a man driving cattle in the right foreground, two figures in the centre and a donkey on the right. These are typical of the incidental groups that Rooker added to his landscapes.
