William Hogarth (1697 - 1764)
RA Collection: Art
Scene illustrating Luke 9:30-34, in which a wounded and robbed Israelite has his wounds treated by a bearded Samaritan (a race despised by the Israelites).
Engraving after the painting by William Hogarth (1736-7), which he presented to St Bartholomew's Hospital where it is still in situ. The parallels between the scene depicted here and the work of the hospital are obvious. The print was engraved by S.F. Ravenet, one of Hogarth's preferred engravers, and J.M. Delatre, with a cartouche of a scene from the life of Rahere in the lower margin.
