Alma-Tadema's Diploma painting is typical of the classical scenes, which prompted Punch to refer to him as a "marbellous painter". A priestess sits in the portico of a Doric temple selling votive statuettes while a partially revealed Dionysian procession enhances the theatricality of the composition. The dramatic appeal of Alma-Tadema's paintings impressed Henry Irving who in 1880 commissioned him to make designs for a production of Coriolanus.
