Content Description

The volume includes the following selected entries: minutes of special meeting to discuss a proposal to allow women, who were artists by profession, to become eligible for membership, including the comments of R. Phené Spiers, who considered that the admission of women would in no way benefit the society, and that a reduction in the number of meetings would increase their interest, 22 June 1887; minutes of special general meeting, at which it was it was resolved to admit 30 lady artists as members, to increase the size of the committee to twelve members, and to limit the number of conversazioni to five, 12 October 1887; minutes of [committee] meeting, including a note that the vacancies in the list of members were reported to be 42, 2 November 1887; minutes of annual general meeting, at which eight female members were elected, 10 November 1887; minutes of [committee] meeting, including honorary secretary's statement that he had made arrangements for a special exhibition of the works of the late Samuel Cousins, RA, 7 March 1888; minutes of [committee] meeting, including a note that the arrangements for the next conversazione were to include the collection of sketches and studies by the late Frank Holl, RA, 5 December 1888; minutes of [committee] meeting, at which it was reported that there were 53 vacancies in the list of members, 6 November 1889; minutes of special general meeting, at which it was resolved not to suspend the entrance fee, and not to accept a proposal for amalgamation from the Artists and Amateurs Society, 4 December 1889; minutes of [committee] meeting, at which it was reported that the society's accounts showed a deficiency of £46 2s 8d, and that nineteen subscriptions were in arrears, 16 July 1890; and minutes of special general meeting, at which it was resolved unanimously that the Graphic Society be dissolved and its affairs wound up, in consequence of the great decrease in the number of members, thereby rendering it impossible to meet necessary expenses: other resolutions were that a contribution of £1 be asked from each member to pay outstanding debts, that thanks be given to the council of University College, for allowing the use of their rooms by the society for so many years, that the society's property be left for the use of the college, that the archives of the society be presented to the Royal Academy of Arts, and that a vote of thanks be given to the president, Sir Federick Leighton, PRA and the other officers of the society, 29 October 1890.
