Historical Background
The Special Committee was elected by the General Assembly of 10 March 1887. It consisted of the President (
Lord Leighton),
Sir John Everett Millais,
Lawrence Alma-Tadema,
Henry Hugh Armstead,
Philip Hermogenes Calderon,
William Powell Frith,
Briton Riviere,
Alfred Waterhouse,
Henry Tanworth Wells and
William Frederick Yeames. Its object was to receive the suggestions of members about reforms in the Royal Academy and to report back to the General Assembly. Its first meeting was 18 May 1887. The Committee reported in 1889, after 29 meetings, under the headings of the composition and government of the RA, the Schools and the summer exhibition.
