RA Collection: People and Organisations
Auction house founded in London by James Christie (1730–1803). Christie’s eldest son, James Christie the younger (1773–1831) joined the firm and directed it after his father’s death. In 1824 he moved the auction house to 8 King Street, London, where it has since remained.
On James Christie Jr.'s death his son George Henry Christie (d 1887) brought William Manson (d 1852) into partnership, so forming Christie & Manson. In 1859 Thomas H. Woods (1829-1906) also became a partner, and the firm became Christie, Manson & Woods.
The last member of the family left the firm in 1889 but the name was retained. The house has handled many of the sales of the great collections. In recent years it has become known for its educational operations, providing courses on art history and professional practice.
